Drawing is forbidden in Islam?

I'm disturbed. Totally disturbed. I ran across a site saying that drawing is unlawful. As a person who loves drawing this can be upsetting. Who wouldn't? Yes, I was once told by dad that we are not allowed to draw humans because the 'people' (which I don't know whom he was referring to) said they might come alive and that we have to mark an X on their neck so they won't come alive. Oh dad, you didn't fall for that one, did you? I certainly did not. I guess he was trying to be funny. XD

Ibn ``Abbâs relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every image maker is in
the Fire. For each image he made, a being will be fashioned to torment him in Hell.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2225) and Sahîh Muslim (2110) – The wording accords with al-Bukhârî]

This really gives me the spook. Really, if she is doing her best as a Muslimah, living the ways Islam tells her and she just happens to love drawing, she is not going to hell just because of this. Is she? I'm sure our Prophet (peace be upon him) said them out of a reason. He can't be saying it out for no reason. I'm not saying this hadith is wrong. My knowledge is too little, but sometimes, you really need a logical explanation to this.

I've been googling around all day, because I really need a firm answer and I found this site HERE. Alhamdulillah. I am a bit relief. The explanation satisfy my needs.

We find in the texts mention of many other major sins that are certainly worse that the making of images – like adultery, taking usury, and abusing parents – without it being declared that the perpetrators of those sins are consigned to the Fire, like we find in “Every image maker is in the Fire”. This should make it even clearer to us that those who make images without the intention of aspiring to create like Allah are not included in the generality of the hadîth’s meaning. Rather, the hadîth applies to all of those who have the intention of aspiring to create like Allah.

When I draw, I can never draw as beautifully as what Allah has created. Nothing can be compared to His creations. My drawing is never perfect, even if it were, to me, they are just drawings. A lifeless piece of drawing. Nothing more. I do it out of pleasure and for the sake of sanity. Drawing helps me to relax my thoughts. I do tend to draw when I'm crazy as well. Oh well...

Drawing is a way for me to express my feelings. Like when I stumble across a cloudy day, it's so much easier to see that in drawing. Rite? People will know instantly through a drawing. What I draw captures the beauty that Allah created within this world. I love to draw eyes because it's truly beautiful and captivating and I love translating it on paper. Does this mean I'm creating something aspiring to create like Allah? I love to draw cartoon as well. I'm not trying to create something bigger from Allah. I can never create something bigger from Allah. I am one of His creations. It never crossed my mind. May Allah protect me from arrogance. I just like to draw, like a kid who loves lollipop. Allah knows best, that's for sure.

Never have I in a million years thought that what I have drawn could be given life or to challenge Allah. Astagfirullah. I know for sure that what I draw is just a piece of drawing, an appreciation to what Allah has blessed me with these hands, something I enjoy doing. Isn't it a sign of His Majesty? That what He gave us is a sign He created us. Nothing can be compared to that. This talent that I have is all from Him. Without Him, can I draw? Without Him, I might not even have these hands.

Bottom line is, I guess it all goes down to what your intentions is. It all goes down to your heart.

May Allah forgive me for all the wrong things I've said. The good things comes from Allah, the not-so-good things comes from my own weaknesses.

Salam

Salaam sister.. drawing is prohibited in islaam. I love to draw too and I am very much concerned about this issue. I have drawn a lot of cartoons/mangas in the past, although i knew that it was prohibited, and now I'm very worried about it

I would suggest you have a look at this website

Thanks for sharing.u exactly spoke of my mind. But u didnt say anything about sculptures.I also believe that our prothet(PBUH) prohibited the depiction of living beings under a particular circumstance when ancient arabs were engaged in idolatry. Even today if anyone go to KSA they will find a sculpture of a camal in front of Jeddah airport. In Quran it is mentioned several times that Allah knows our intention very well.So when any person makes a drawing or sculpture for their own peace of mind or to teach someone anything or as a symbol of protest against something Allah knows very well that they have no intention to compete with Allah. In our country majority of the people r muslims but idolaters r also there.Do they ever worship the statues in the road?NO.They make their own god and goddesses and worship them. The road side statues r only a representation of our art and culture.

hi. sorry for answering you soooooooooooooooo late. i'm from turkey. and you ?

Hehe, I was in your exact spot! And came across this page while doing my own 'research'. Glad I came out with a happy ending. Don't you just love happy endings? :)

Thanks!

on a side note...Allah creation is incredibly magnificent, to the point that, in movie, cartoons or whatever, whenever our little human brains wanted to make, an alien for example, it mostly took some form of a human(hands, feet, head, eyes, etc). This is how limited we are!

You said exactly what I was thinking. I think it was forbidden because in the time of the Prophit (Sal Allah alihe wa salam) it was used as way to shirk. They actually made them to worship or idolize them.

to be honest I read alot, that drawing what allah has created was unlawful, mostly if u try as hard as possible to get it right in detail down to the last stroke of the brush, pencil etc. so what i "used" to do was exclude a part of the body, maybe the nose? and make it more cartoon like... but idk I still don't feel right.. and my friends say "why don't you draw things like vases, etc. or atleast something that does not challenge what allah SAW created... and im clueless so I have no idea if those are right too... all I do though is try anime-ish drawings that don't have a nose or something(sounds strange i know) but in the end with alot of effort it looks nice in the end maybe even making some object cover the face like some toons do, so that you avoid actually drawing a human.

What do you think?

Alhamdulillah! Now I feel much better. I thought I'm not allowed to draw at all. But I know that I never intend to actually -create- a being. Only Allah swt could do those amazing things!

In all reality I hardly suppose my post will even find you, but In truth, yes I do believe drawing IS haram, the arguments you gave ring true to your ears, but are a farce.
Drawing Is haram because It Is an imperfect art that even to get to perfection requires practice, but what you get In between are disfigured creatures that are probably the reason It IS haram.
Allah Is our creator but beyond our comprhension, who knows what kind of offense he takes to this.
who knows what kind of effects are by drawing that are only visible to his all encompassing knowledge.
In the end If you still consider your own opinion than be so, Its all about your taqwa, and for all intents your probably a better muslim than I. But I needed to express my opinion.
aslamualaikum

would you be able to give up the life your living for allah, c'mon show a little sacrifice for Allah subhana wa t'ala. now what you did was search for an authetic source which was sahih bukhari and what you did was not trust that and take it into mind no. you searched for sources that suited your ideals this not right. plz consider where you get your information, and i used to draw i knew it was wrong so i don't really draw anymore, try a substitue calligraphy :) but do not look into islam to fit your ideals. just like some people say when they have girlfriends or friends that are girls,''nothing will happen we're just friends'' when ALLAH said to not even come near zinna!!!

First of all, Let me include a little axiom:
1. GOD IS NOT IRRATIONAL, AS A RESULT HE DOES NOT CREATE IRRATIONAL IDEAS.
The proof for this is fairly simple, God would not create concepts that are irrational to us, humans.
Second of all, Another axiom, this time on drawing:
2. DRAWING IS A NATURAL ACT.
Our Brain itself has a complete visual-spatial area which takes on the visual tasks of which drawing is an example.
A QUESTION: Why would God give us a brain which naturally can draw when we would not use it?
3. Drawing itself has a natural reason.
Our Brain seeks rhythm, harmony, art, and aesthetics. In other words, Our Brain naturally admires, no, loves, Art. Representational Art is one of the most beautifull and one of the most admired of all the arts.
Question: Why would God, who is beautiful, and loves beauty, forbid us from drawing, us, mere mortals?
If he forbade us from it, why make us love it in the first place, when it can bring us no harm? Unlike smoking as an example.
Third, The alleged argument against drawing:
The alleged argument: Drawing is forbidden.
Alleged Proof: Two hadiths.
Counterproof: The hadiths clearly contradict rational thought, they clearly show an irrational concept which can not be attributed to our Prophet, furthermore, They go against the Quranic concept of fitra, furthermore, They have no Quranic bases at all, let alone supporting verses.
The Alleged "Reason": The alleged reason is that the artist would be creating things like Allah.
The argument against: This includes more than one assumption, as I list:
Assumption 1: Artists want to create Allah's beings.
Counter: Artists do not really, Artists want to SHOW THEIR VISION by their art.
The Artist wants to SHOW HOW HE SEES REALITY, Not copying reality.
In other words, The Artist does not want to RE-CREATE REALITY rather SEE A NEW DIMENSION OF REALITY; The Artist delivers his vision of the Soul of a certain being through his drawing, The artist wants to show t he how he perceives the soul of a being, Can we, for example, see the Mona Lisa as living? Not at all! But we can feel her, we can see how her personality is and how her soul was so mysteriously constructed, the same can be applied for David, Pieta, The Last Supper and on and on.
This argument is built on a permise that does not exist.
Assumption 2: God does not like beings to re-create his beauty.
This second assumption is connected to the first false one, even if the first is correct, then, I ask a question, Is God as childish as to hate people re-creating his work? Does not he love beauty, and would not people re-creating his creation would also be re-creating beauty?
If then, I should not Imagine a Blackman who is boxing. You just imagined it, That is Image-making! As we know, a traditional Salafa Shiekh would scream: "It is haraam!" I now see clearly the reason why Salafi Shiekhs always scream, because The more you repeat it, repeat it aloud, It becomes truer.
Therefore, Our conclusion is clear: DRAWING IS NOT UNPERMITTED, DRAWING IS A NATURAL ACT THAT IS PERMITTED.
My two cents.

"Every image maker is in
the Fire."

This is final my friend. What your prophet said is what your god said, since as it always says in your books: Your god speaks through him.

In your holy book it says: There is no room for interpretation. It is your god speaking to you, my friend. He doesnt need anyone to explain the meaning to you.

And i think: "Every image maker is in
the Fire." is a clear statement. One cannot be more serious about it.

If you start doubting that this is the word of your God and not some warmonger who wanted to control his warriors with the fear of a "god" to not do something he wouldnt allow.

Do you really believe that? No i mean seriously, arent you a little smarter? While you read my comment open your eyes. You know aswell as I, aswell as every human being even the religious ones... somewhere burried deep within your head:

"There will be no afterlife, it is a lie for me to not be afraid of dying."

It is a lie my friend. This is your only life, your one chance.
And sorry but i have to be direct here: Your wasting in by thinking if a warmonger would be fine with you drawing living things.

Again, you know as well as i do... when you die your brain cells will decay and thats it.
This life is wonderful and your ONLY chance. Dont waste it by living by the rules of some underdeveloped warriors.

can Muslims draw cartoon characters without the intention of trying to be equal to Allah

Anonymous said...

Drawing pictures faceless, without the intention. People what is said is said. Drawing is haram. you can't argue if you want to argue on it please go to a near store and buy a hadith.

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.834 Narrated by Muslim
We were with Masruq at the house of Yasar bin Numair. Masruq saw pictures on his terrace and said, "I heard 'Abdullah saying that he heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "The people who will receive the severest punishment from Allah will be the picture makers.' "
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.448 Narrated by Abu Talha
I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 3.428 Narrated by Said bin Abu Al Hasan
While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Messenger (saws). I heard him saying, 'Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures, I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."
The Messenger of Allah (saws) specifically declared it forbidden to draw pictures of humans or animate objects, thus the believers must abstain from it regardless of whether it is faceless or with face, with body or without body, etc. That would be closest to following the commandment of the Messenger of Allah (saws).
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Actually, I did research about this and I mostly heard(read) ''It is haram'' so I got really really sad, my heart got broken, but still I'm thankful that I actually searched up about this before it was too late.
While reading this, right now, it feels like I wrote everything up there cuz I can relate a lot, coming up with theories that maybe...maybe drawing manga and anime wasn't haram because they aren't real, but still I stopped drawing..inside of me I knew it that drawing is haram no matter what and I knew that I would get used to drawing trees or flowers, I knew that the so called ''drawing talent'' was a test for me and for everyone with this talent. So, it's better to stop drawing before it's too late than going in Hell (Allah knows best), just saying. May Allah forgive us.

Salam , drawing ANYTHING that has a soul is haraam. Things such as : humans, animals , birds . However, drawing things that do not have a soul is not haraam. Things such as : cars, houses, plants . If what you're drawing is for educational purposes, it is fine to do so .
